Rugby World Cup 2011 Opening Ceremony — we were there!
One of the largest ever New Zealand television audiences tuned into the Opening Ceremony of the Rugby World Cup.
Viewers witnessed one of the most spectacular live extravaganza shows ever staged in New Zealand which was beamed live to over a billion people worldwide. ShowQuip were a major contributor, being instrumental in the construction and supply of this wonderful 7 metre high gold cup that was the major prop for the opening ceremony. Fabricated in Christchurch and keep under wraps for months preceding the show, the sheer scale of this structure was mind boggling.
Constructed largely of aluminium, the prop weighed in at approximately 1.8 tonnes and travelled on six inflatable turf tyres. Having to fit through a 3 metre gap called for removable wings that the ground crew had to attach before wheeling onto the pitch.
It was constructed in two halves, each consisting of four quadrants enabling it to pack down and travel in a 40ft high cube container complete with base.
ShowQuip engaged local company ProMetal Industries to aid in the construction and ensuring the tight deadline was achieved.
World Buskers Festival
Special access ramps for the World Buskers Festival had to be turned around in quick smart time, staff worked day and night to meet the deadline, finished product looks very smart inside the superb inflatable dome situated in Cathedral Square in Christchurch City during the duration of event.
Queenstown Winter Festival 2010
The Queenstown Winter Festival has evolved into New Zealand’s biggest winter party – it’s a 10 day celebration of Queenstowns unique culture and community with street parties, fireworks, international and local acts, jazz, comedy, Mardi Gras, and plenty of Mountain Mayhem.
ShowQuip supplied trussing and staging to tomtom productions that transported product onto the slopes and erected structures down by the waterfront, all to create a fantastic visual experience for the celebration.
FIFA World Cup – Global Truss Grid for TVNZ
ShowQuip supplied and installed the ground support structure for this stunning studio set (image above) to broadcast the 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP from the TVNZ Atrium. The eye catching F34 Global Truss system utilizing standard box truss and transitions with custom base plates, plus individual plasma screen supports has helped to transform this space and provided practical rigging for lighting and sound equipment.
Longer term the ground support will be replaced with a flown grid structure to provide even more flexibility and opportunities to use the Atrium area for live broadcasts.
Thank you TVNZ for the opportunity for this product exposure.
